Excerpts from the Article:
An inmate was killed late Sunday morning during a battle between rival gangs at a maximum-security federal prison that’s nestled on the outskirts of the newest sections of The Villages. Inmate Troi Venable, 39, was killed late Sunday morning after a riot broke out between rival gangs at the Coleman Federal Correctional Complex, which is located just outside the walls of the newest sections of Florida’s Friendliest Hometown.
Authorities reported that the fight between a white supremacist gang and a primarily African American gang broke out around 11:45 a.m. in the high-security area of the Coleman Federal Correctional Complex, which sits on 1,600 acres and as of 2010 was the largest facility of its kind operated by the Bureau of Prisons.
Inmate Troi Venable, 39, was killed after being stabbed with a homemade knife. He was serving 17 years for assault and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and had been at the Coleman facility, located at 846 NE 54th Terr., since 2017, officials said.
The Villages revealed last week that it is planning more construction near the prison, which also was in the news in August when a “mass casualty” incident occurred in the same wing and involved as many as five patients. The mega-retirement community plans to build a cluster of buildings in an agricultural area across County Road 470 from the prison.
The prison facility has long been a sore spot with Villagers who live in the Village of Fenney, just a little more than five miles from the facility that has housed such high-profile inmates as famed Boston crime boss James “Whitey” Bulger; convicted pedophile Larry Nassar, the former USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University team doctor who was moved there in August 2018 after allegedly being attacked in an Arizona prison; former Congresswoman Corrine Brown; Somalia pirate Gabul Abdullah Ali and al-Quaida sympathizer Amine El Khalifi.
Fenney residents have complained about constantly being able to hear PA announcements from the prison, which in November 2014 was the site where an unarmed guard was hospitalized after being beaten for three minutes by an inmate.
