You KNEW I would comment on this; it has taken me a few days to get to it. We have all heard the horrifying stories, so I do not print much below.
In light of the breadth and depth of these atrocities, and given the incidents in other states in recent years, here is what I propose: Since government agencies are unlikely to undertake this, the Catholic Church, with the BILLIONS of dollars it is sitting on, should hire a top-notch independent mega law firm to do an investigation in every state into abuse and its cover up by the church! Then give the results to the authorities for prosecutions!
Every church official involved must be fired, stripped of any benefits, and prosecuted if possible!
Excerpts from the Article:
Bishops and other leaders of the Roman Catholic Church in Pennsylvania covered up child sexual abuse by more than 300 priests over a period of 70 years, persuading victims not to report the abuse and law enforcement not to investigate it, according to a searing report issued by a grand jury on Tuesday. The report, which covered six of the state’s eight Catholic dioceses and found more than 1,000 identifiable victims, is the broadest examination yet by a government agency in the United States of child sexual abuse in the Catholic Church. The report said there are likely thousands more victims whose records were lost or who were too afraid to come forward.
It catalogs horrific instances of abuse: a priest who raped a young girl in the hospital after she had her tonsils out; a victim tied up and whipped with leather straps by a priest; and another priest who was allowed to stay in ministry after impregnating a young girl and arranging for her to have an abortion.
The sexual abuse scandal has shaken the Catholic Church for more than 15 years, ever since explosive allegations emerged out of Boston in 2002. But even after paying billions of dollars in settlements and adding new prevention programs, the church has been dogged by a scandal that is now reaching its highest ranks. The Pennsylvania report comes soon after the resignation of Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick, the former archbishop of Washington, who is accused of sexually abusing young priests and seminarians, as well as minors.
The grand jury said that while some accused priests were removed from ministry, the church officials who protected them remained in office or even got promotions. One bishop named in the report as vouching for an abusive priest was Cardinal Donald Wuerl, now the archbishop of Washington. “Until that changes, we think it is too early to close the book on the Catholic Church sex scandal,” the jury wrote.
The report is unlikely to lead to new criminal charges or civil lawsuits under the current law because the statute of limitations has expired. Only two of the cases in the report so far have led to criminal charges.
Read the Whole Story:
Letter to the Editor or Editorial Submission – “Shame and Sorrow” is not Enough – 8/18/18
A few days ago the news broke, with this headline: “Catholic Priests Abused 1,000 Children in Pennsylvania, Report Says”. Church officials say two words express their dismay: “Shame” and “Sorrow”. Shame and sorrow are not enough, so I have an idea.
We have all heard the horrifying stories, so I do not print much detail about them here. We are talking about the brutal rape, torture and severe emotional abuse of little children, and the astonishingly callous and calculated complex plan by church officials to cover it all up. The report says a thousand victims, but I can only wonder how high the real number is.
In light of the breadth and depth of these atrocities, and given the incidents in other states in recent years, here is my idea: Since government agencies are unlikely to undertake such a task, the Catholic Church, with the BILLIONS of dollars it is sitting on, should hire a top-notch independent mega law firm to do a proper, thorough investigation in every state into abuse and its cover up by the Catholic Church! Then give the results to the victims and to authorities, for prosecutions and so that the victims may seek whatever justice they can through civil suits! Laws concerning the statute of limitations will vary from state to state, so here is another idea: Congress should enact a special Bill, referencing this specific investigation (whatever it might be called), providing that no state Statute of Limitations can bar recovery for any valid civil claim, nor can it bar prosecution of those responsible.
All of this is needed because, despite talk of great “reforms” when news of early cases came to light … nothing changed, and our children suffered.
Every church official involved in the abuses and the cover up of them must be fired, stripped of any benefits, and prosecuted if possible!

I get lots of letters published, and ghost write for others. THIS IS THE BEST WAY TO REACH THOUSANDS OF READERS! The keys to getting your Letter published are:
1. Keep it to 250 words or fewer.
2. Do not make it about “poor little old me”. Describe the problem as one which not only affects the individual, but is a senseless or ineffective measure, policy, or law which also harms communities and society. For example, with reentry, the obstacles make it unnecessarily difficult for the individual, but also harm society by making it hard to become productive, spending money and paying taxes in the community, and they cause increased recidivism = increased crime.
3. Speak from your heart.
4. Google any facts you are not sure about.
5. Do not name-call.
Do what works: Write that Letter!
